Bosu Breakout Breakdown

All I knew about Bosu Breakout was that it was a conditioning class involving the Bosu ball.  But really, what more did I need to know?  The Bosu makes everything fun.

If you're not familiar with the Bosu, it's basically a big rubber ball that's been sliced in half.  Some exercises are done with the curved part up, some with the flat part up; hence the name, Bosu, which is a truncation of "both sides up."  There are lots of different ways to work with a Bosu, but most commonly it's used to provide an unstable surface.  If you stand on either side, you need to engage your core to balance and keep from falling off.

I had been wanting to try Bosu Breakout for a while, but 8:30 am on Sundays is rarely ideal, even though Equinox is just down the block.  I have no idea why I was awake in time this weekend, but I was, so I went.

The class was solid.  We didn't do as many fun Bosu tricks as I would have liked, but I got a good workout.  We did a lot of weighted squats, lunges, bicep curls etc., all using the Bosu to test our balance.  I worked with a 12 lb bar, and 5 and 8 lb free weights.  The music was somewhat lacking, but the instructor, Terrell Pruitt, had incredible energy, so I barely noticed.

Bosu Breakout was fun, and I'd totally go back.  While I'll was there, though, my thoughts kept drifting to CrossFit.  More on that soon.

Gym Belle as Snow White

With just one week to go till the Disney Princess Half Marathon, I needed to test drive my race day outfit.  Since it's Disney, many women run the race in costume.  As those who have attended my Halloween parties or my Barbie themed 30th (we share the same birthday!) can attest, I never turn down an opportunity to play dress-up.  I'll be running as Snow White.

I've never done a half before, so I didn't want to do anything too funky costume-wise; I decided to wear real running clothes.  Fortunately, Running Skirts has a line of princess skirts that are perfect for the Disney Princess half.  I'm pairing the yellow skirt with a blue mesh t-shirt that I'm customizing with adhesive felt to make it look like the top of Snow White's dress.  I've also got a red sweatband to wear in place of Snow White's bow, but honestly, I think I'm going to wear my running hat.  (It's blue, so it's pretty much goes.)  Maybe I'll stick a bow on it.

Now, it's one thing to dress like Snow White at the Magic Kingdom, and quite another to dress like Snow White in Central Park, particularly in the dead of winter.  I decided to take the slushy conditions as a sign and test my outfit indoors this weekend.

The Equinox on 74th street has an odd configuration.  It's five stories, but only two are above-ground, the reception floor and a cardio machine/weight lifting floor upstairs.  There's a second cardio/weight area all the way in the basement.  Most days when I work out at 74th street, I fight the crowds to be on the top floor.  I've always thought of the basement as a sort of spillover space, a last resort on a super crowded day.  I certainly didn't expect it to be busy at 8am on a Sunday.  I opted for the basement this weekend because I didn't want to be seen in my princess garb.  As it turns out, a decent number of people prefer the more private, mellow coziness of the basement.  In fact, there's kind of a bottle-dweller anti-scene down there.  In any event, it suited my purposes; I didn't get as many looks as I thought I would.

I learned two key things during my dress rehearsal.  1) I am buying some of that Body Glide that comes in the little packets because, like all shorts, the shorts under the skirt will ride up and that will get annoying approximately one hour in.  2) It's hot when you run in above-freezing temperatures!  My face was beet red after an hour running at room temperature.

I've decided that I'm going to use my arm-band for my iPod and my water bottle with the hand-strap.  If the water bottle gets annoying, I'll toss it along the way.  It was cheap.  If the arm-band starts chaffing, I can hold it or switch arms.  Am I asking for trouble?  If anyone has any advice on this, please send it my way!

Try Tri Again

There are a few things I'm terrible at, and saying no to a fun opportunity tops that list.  Particularly when that opportunity is a challenge.  So when Equinox emailed out this week about an indoor tri competition next weekend, I signed up right away.  I run and spin all the time, and I used to swim, so I figured I could handle it.  No problem.

I was pumped.  I'm totally tri-curious, but somewhat hesitant, in part because I never learned how to ride a bike.  I tried, but I never could get it.  Honestly, I have no idea what that's about.  I figure skated as a kid, so it wasn't a coordination or balance problem.  I just had some kind of hang-up, I guess.  Anyway, the indoor tri seemed too good to pass up because I wouldn't have to worry about the biking.

Reality started to set in about 24 hours later as I tried to figure out how to throw swimming into the mix when I'm training a half-marathon that is three weeks away, running the Haiti race next Saturday, and have two more nights of Elements at Crossfit this week.

Yesterday, I hopped in the pool to see if I could really manage 500 yards next weekend.  I started swimming a few years ago when my knees were really bad.  My doc had tried to tell me not do any exercise that involved bending my knees.  You can imagine how I took that news.  Suddenly, my cardio options were the arm-bike and swimming.  The arm bike is a torture device, so swimming became my thing.  Sort of.

I have a love/hate relationship with swimming.  I love: actually swimming.  I hate: the bathing suits, the shaving, the swim caps, what the chlorine does to my hair, what the chlorine does my nail polish, getting water up my nose, splashy men, old men with baggy swimsuits, the who swims in what lane politics, etc.  The second my knees started to improve, I stopped swimming.  It's cool, but it was such a hassle.

My swim yesterday was great.  It felt really nice to be back in the water.  I kept it short because I'd already run, and I knew I had a big run coming up today.  As I sat in the whirlpool afterwards, I figured that I could get through the 500 yard swim for the tri.  But I'd be "getting through."  It wouldn't be pretty.  Perhaps doing this two weeks before the half-marathon wouldn't be the best idea.

I had a lot of time to think about it on my 11ish mile run this morning.  When I got home, I cancelled.  It kills me to back out of something, but there will be plenty of time for tris in the future.  If I hadn't signed up to begin with, I wouldn't have swam this weekend and remembered how much I like it.  So, it all worked out well.  And who knows, maybe I'll even learn how to ride a bike this spring.  I'll keep you posted.
